Ecology

Why does CED conduct Ecological Programs?

At its foundation, CED identified ecology as an important aspect of its scope of activities. Many activities and meetings with key people in our communities and other organizations have shown us that the Pollog region needs organizations to focus on the needs of our environment in tandem with the needs of our people.

In preparing the 2009-2014 strategic plan to support Triagolnik and Pestalozzi Foundation, CED’s leaders created the program “Clean Environment – Healthy Future.” This program sought to raise the awareness of our residents, both the youth and adults, of methods of environmental protection, promotion and protection of the beautiful Sharr region and its flora and fauna, in addition to promoting environmentally conscious tourism in the Sharr region.

Ecological Events:

With CED’s first implementations of activities in 2007, it began its yearly “Day of Ecology,” hosting it on March 21st. This activity aims to foster creative and innovative approaches to ecology, giving young people a chance to engage in environmentally educational activities and demonstrate their awareness for environmental protection. Every year, CED, The municipality of Tearce, Municipal Enterprise, Eco Flor, and other local organizations implement the same activity.

Along with “Eco Day” in March, the larger strategic project “Clean Environment – Healthy Future” still continues. With support from the the Macedonian Ecological association, CED implemented the event “Let’s Save the Planet Earth.” In By conducting different workshops in all of Tearce’s schools, in Nerasht village, and in several other institutions and villages. CED also hosted several lectures with various experts for this project, building up to a final event which took place at Kodra e Diellit/Popova Šapka (Sunny Hill Ski Resort in Tetovo) – and included several foreign and local supporters.

Activites to Promote the beauty of Sharr:

Starting in November 2012, CED began its cooperation with the Center for Contemporary Arts in Skopje and with the Rural Network Right to village, gathering the Sharr region’s population, in addition to activists from Kosovo, to implement debates and forums and advertise the effort to change the Sharr Mountains into a national park.

In 2013 CED joined the network for cross-border cooperation with Kosovo and Albania to protect the Sharr Mountains and persuade the Macedonian government to declare it as a national park. Uniting in this fashion, this network embraced a common vision of the Sharr mountains as a natural haven with an intrinsic value and needing to be protected.

With the support of the Macedonian ecological society, the organization conducted a seminar in 2012 for all activists and interested parties in the region on the topic of protected space, explaining the meanings and benefits of a national park to attendees.

From 2012 to 2014 the organization implemented various events and worked to spread information to promote the Sharr region’s beauty. By making the region aware the rich plant and animal world of the Sharr, creating info tables placed along the road to the natural site Three Waters, placing billboards on main roads and highways, gathering support from the schools in the municipality, advertising with pictures, and by hosting events designed to inform both the media and people, CED has brought Tearce to embrace, own, and identify with the effort to protect the Sharr region from the dangers of climate change.

Creating a Strategy against Climate Change:

In cooperation with the Municipality of Tearce, CED undertook the large project of designing a municipal strategy against climate change. Created under the Municipal Climate strategies project, financed by USAID, and implemented by Milieukontakt Macedonia, the project included several municipalities in Macedonia and continues to fight against climate change. Green Agenda methodology guides the continued implementation and practice of the strategy, allowing all parties maximum access and involvement in decision process and identifying possible solutions.

strategji_foto_vebThe Green Agenda process began in June 2013 with a meeting including all stakeholders from the region of the municipality of Tearce: non-governmental organizations, various local associations, institutions, businesses, and activists with extensive knowledge of climate change and passion for saving nature from the threats of climate change.

Within this project, the municipality won two financial grants, which continue to fund and drive this long-term project.

Strategic Objectives:

The Strategy will reflect and address Tearce’s current needs in addition to providing measures for fighting and addressing aspects of climate changes.

Through workshops, trainings, and meetings conducted by experts and trainers, CED, the Municipality, and other organizations will transfer skills and knowledge to project leaders and other stakeholders in the community.

Through the Green Agenda process, the project’s executors will gain knowledge and use the process to promote the values identified by members of working groups and provide a future structure for the community to use. In addition they will identify people, crops, and agriculture most affected by climate change in the municipality of Tearce and suggesting measures for adaptation and climate protection.
